Situation/
Background

Silvicultural consequences of partial harvest prescriptions on the Tongass NF may not be fully understood.

Discussion

There are ongoing studies that may shed some light on the consequences of partial harvest systems, for example Alternative-to-Clearcutting and Retrospective Study. Partial harvest prescriptions in TM, ML, or SV LUDs need to be consistent with sound silvicultural principals and practices as well as need to be consistent with the goals and objectives of the LUD.

Strategy

Continue the Alternatives to Clearcutting; implement the PNW/FS diameter limit harvest analysis proposed for 2005, and similar studies. Complete the Silvicultural Implications of Partial Harvest on the Tongass report.
